Women doing digital platform work: Lessons from Ghana

Women in Ghana have a long history of work outside of the home, although the nature of their work has changed over time.  With the increasing digitisation and globalization of work, Ghanaian women are increasingly participating in platform livelihoods, whether they are trading goods and services via WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook or working for companies such as Glovo, Uber, Jumia and Upwork.  In partnership with Caribou Digital and with financial support from the Mastercard Foundation, CSPS undertook a study to understand women’s experiences of platform work in Ghana and how this has changed in the wake of Covid-19. Who is doing platform work? What helps or hinders their work. And how might policy interventions boost young women’s participation in this growing sector in a way that is both dignified and empowering?
