CSPS co-organises the Ghana Philanthropy Conference 2024

The Centre for Social Policy Studies (CSPS) at the University of Ghana co-organised a two-day philanthropy conference in Ghana. This was in collaboration with Star Ghana Foundation (SGF), the Ghana Philanthropy Forum, the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, the West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI), the CSOs SDGs Platform, and the National Youth Authority. Conference participants discussed how to promote volunteering and other forms of philanthropy (which is generosity or compassion towards others, expressed through charitable acts) in Ghanaians.

Dr Emmanuel Kumi, Senior Research Fellow at CSPS, represented CSPS at the event, which had the theme "Volunteerism as Civic Action”. Dr. Kumi spoke about the ways in which volunteering can help address social needs and add to efforts to promote social development. Dr. Kumi conducts research on philanthropy and volunteerism. His research in this area has won an award from the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action.

Rev. Fr. Andrew Campbell, a Catholic missionary priest, encouraged Ghanaians to embrace volunteerism. He said philanthropy was not the obligation of only people with power and money but that every individual could find ways to show care for those in need.
