Background: During my undergraduate studies, I had the opportunity to participate in a couple of data collection projects with the University of Ghana’s Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER). My urge to delve deeply into research was spurred, among other things, by the experiences I gained through field interactions. I had already applied to study MSc Economics at a German university in 2019, but Dr George Domfe, a Senior Research Fellow at CSPS, strongly recommended the Master of Research and Public Policy (M.RPP) programme. Considering the M.RPP’s multifaceted approach to research and policy analysis, I ultimately opted for it.
Life @ CSPS: My period of studies at CSPS, ranging from coursework to practical sessions and the mandatory internship, has left me with remarkable and memorable experiences. Prominent among them is a group presentation I led. Each group was expected to analyse, critique, and present an assigned policy. My group pulled a surprise when we went a step further to propose a new policy which was intended to address the loopholes identified in our assigned policy. This unique experience highlights the spirit of teamwork and ingenuity in addressing challenges in our individual lives, workplaces, and society at large.
Networks: I have built an effective relationship with the faculty at CSPS, particularly Dr. George Domfe and my supervisor and mentor, Prof. Nana Akua Anyidoho. Also, my M.RPP colleagues serve as a vast pool of resources from which I continually tap knowledge and opinions. Some of them continue to engage my services in their private and corporate research projects. I strongly believe that the networks built will boost my further academic and professional pursuits.
Goals: My supervisor, Professor Nana Akua Anyidoho, who is also the director of CSPS said, “Part of my supervisory process is to teach you the rubrics of doing research, including how you write up research.” The wealth of knowledge – both theoretical and practical – I have acquired in conducting research and analysing policy is nothing short of her words. Additionally, I have acquired soft skills including communication, critical thinking, public speaking, and teamwork. There is no doubt that these skills are vital to success that transcends academia. More importantly, I see myself to be well equipped for further studies.
