CSPS Social Policy Seminar on employment/labour conditions on agric plantations

As part of the celebration of the Day of Scientific Rennaissance of Africa at the University of Ghana, CSPS held a special (virtual) seminar on a topic that brought together two central themes for social policy and social development on the continent: agriculture and employment.

Dr. Adowa Yeboah Gyapong, Research Fellow at CSPS, unpacked how and why large-scale agricultural land investments have minimal employment benefits for rural communities in the context of the existing labour governance in Ghana. She based her presentation on her empirical research on the struggles of farmworkers on a transnational oil palm plantation and an analysis of the power relations that shape the distribution of employment benefits. In her conclusion, she called for policy measures to address and recognise structural inequalities within and outside agriculture.
